RESIDUE is an exhibition comprised of recent mixed media works by four artists that challenge and interpret notions of identity, gender politics, and domesticity. In our highly charged, ever-changing political environment, narratives addressing the home often appear to be almost quaint. The universal idea of home--a retreat, a sanctuary, and respite from a fast-paced and often-hostile world outside--is something we all try to define & embrace. Identity, gender, and the expanded definition of 'family' further complicate notions surrounding home. Challenging, investigating, and interpreting domestic themes are at the very core of RESIDUE.

"RESIDUE reveals the psychic and physical remnants of how we live or the remains of a domestic dream never lived. Therese Buchmiller, Paul D. McKee, and the collaborative team of Garth Amundson and Pierre Gour conjure up the nostalgic dregs of an idyllic domesticity, the memento mori of home life past, or the vestigal traces of actual bodily inhabitation. Loosened pages in a photo album bear traces of generations of touch, a forgotten bauble in a cleaned-out junk drawer becomes a relic, curling wallpaper whispers about time, taste, and neglect."

Gayle Clemans, recent UW PhD recipient and regular contributor to the Seattle Times.
